Week 1.5: Un hecho de vida: nadie le gustan los insectos.

Happy Fourth of Julyyyy! I hope everyone's had a fun day so far in the United States :)
Mexico doesn’t exactly celebrate Independence Day for the United States (unfortunate, but understandable), so I won’t get to do any sparklers this year! :( And sparklers are my very favorite firework to do... (Probably because I’m too scared to do anything else hahaha).

Anyway, my roommates and I are planning on getting some American food for dinner to celebrate. Maybe pizza or hamburgers from a fast food place or something... We'll see :)

Alright, my activities of the week so far! :)

For Family Home Evening on Monday we learned how to dance Merengue and a couple other typical dances down here.
I’m probably one of the worst dancers you’ll ever meet in the world. I just can’t do it. And forget it if you think I can dance in a way that requires you to move your hips all fluidly! I’m one of the most uncoordinated people I know! (That’s why I did swimming in high school!)

But who knows, maybe eventually I’ll learn to shake my hips like Shakira like this baby penguin can…
Tuesday my roommates and I decided to go to Progreso after lunch so we could do our homework there. How often can you say that you went to the beach JUST to do homework?? Definitely a first for me! Awesoooome.

It was raining on our bus ride there, but luckily it stopped by the time we arrived! It was pretty windy and a little overcast there, but it was nice to be in some weather that wasn’t muggy and blinding! Haha :)

Here's Kate and I enjoying the cooler weather:

While we were there, I GOT FREAKING ATTACKED BY A BEE.
I’ve never been stung before, so I’m terrified of bees. I swear that they’re Dementor spawn…
The bee had landed on my arm and was just crawling around deciding where it would like to sting me before ending its miserable life. Luckily Kate saved me and swatted it off with her notebook. I was a little shaken, but I was alright since it flew away off into the distance.

Or so I thought.

No less than 30 seconds later, Gabi says, “Chanel, don’t freak out… But the bee is on you.”

Naturally I want to freak out! But fortunately I kept my cool til Gabi saved me for the second time from this awful, relentless bee, and swatted it off (overcoming one of her big fears! THANK YOU GABI!).

After, I jumped out of my chair and did a little cleansing “get all bugs away from me or I might die” dance.

Once I went to sit back down, calmed down, I looked down, and THERE THE BEE WAS. IT WAS SITTING ON MY FREAKING CHAIR.
Why did this bee insist on tormenting me??!

Thankfully, Kate saved me once again and smushed it with her notebook.
The result of the smushed bee:
Sadly, then I had smushed bee guts on my chair. Yummy…

While we’re on the topic of bugs, I should tell you, the bugs here are so gross. Oh my goodness. I’ve told you before, but let me say it again… I HATE BUGS. All insects of every kind! EW. Or, as they say here in Yucatan, Fó!

I’ve never seen a cockroach in real life before, and I saw one my first morning here. SO SCARY. It was in our room being all nasty with its antennas and whatnot. ICK.
Just to give you an idea of how big they are, here’s a comparison of one to Kelsey’s toe:
It's the same size!
NASTY CREATURES.

I’ve been blessed to have only seen a spider once, and it was a decently sized one! It was at Dziblichaltún and it wasn’t close to me at all, so no worries, I lived!

But I would just like it better if there were no bugs to see in general. That’d be nice :)

... I have a proposition…
Just kiddiiiing!
... Sort of.

Wednesday our second class of the day got cancelled since our teacher was sick, so we got home 2 hours early! Yaaay! :) Except that now we have 4 hours of that class on Tuesday... Ah well...

Later that day we went to Gran Plaza to see Monster’s University. It was dubbed in Spanish, but I understood a lot! Yay for progressing in my Spanish comprehension!

Afterward Gabi, Kelsey, and I walked around the mall.
AND GUESS WHAT WE FOUND IN ONE OF THE STORES.
Kinder Surprise Eggs!!! And other Kinder things too!
Crazy, right?!!?

Also, there was this cute little shop called “Kükis.” I didn’t understand the name until I saw that they served these adorable smiley-faced cookies! I wanted one SO BAD.
Aren't they just adorable?!?

For dinner we got Mexican fast food at a place called Los Trompos. I got yummy tacos al pastor! Mmmmm!

Okay, just a little random thought…
Oh my gracious, Papá is so cute. I can’t get over it! It’s so funny to hear him say weird English words like “Big Gulp” and “Slurpee”. He doesn’t talk all that much, but when he does he’s really funny and just adorable! Today he even said to me, “Excuse me, miss.” SO CUTE. He's so great and I'm so happy he's mi papá!

The people here are really nice in general. Today at school a guy asked me about my backpack and told me it was beautiful. It was a little weird, but nice. People will help if you need directions and help you out when you have issues grabbing limes for your delicious tacos... Embarrassing.

I love it here! It's so great! Thank goodness I still have 6 weeks left! :)

774 Days Left! :)
